November 25, 2008: Nandita Das's debut film Firaaq won a special award from Ministry of Culture, Greece at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF) '2008.
TIFF is one of the leading festivals in Europe and the 49th edition was held between the 14th and 23rd of November 2008. It is the oldest festival to focus on the work of emerging new International filmmakers. Firaaq, had two screenings at the festival of which the first was on the 16th at the iconic Olympian Cinema. Screening for the first time in competition at an International Film Festival, Firaaq not only won the special award but was one of the audience favorites.
The film is an aftermath story, so there is hardly any violence in the film, but a lot of tension and fear that surrounds the people,” tells Nandita, who during her work as a social activist on issues of violence and human rights, came across many stories which inspired her actress to direct Firaaq. “I would not have thought of a better place to showcase the film. It’s a festival for the movie-buffs and here I will know how it relates with the audiences. Here the expectations are very high and the competition is very tough as there are so many exceptional flicks from all over the world so it would be a tough battle.”
Says Shailendra Singh, Joint MD of Percept Limited, “Our films have always won the critical acclaim which has been proved by such festivals and it is a great opportunity for us.” The film stars Nasseruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Deepti Naval, Raghubir Yadav, Sanjay Suri, Tisca Chopra, Shahana Goswami and Nowaz.
